The Hammock

In the back yard hangs relaxation in physical form.
stressful days,long nights, hours of school
the hammock brings rest.
I lay with nature,
loud but soft at the same time;
the hum of the bees, the sway of the trees
My friends and I lay together,
but alone in our own worlds.
We know eachothers thoughts;
we don't need to say a thing.
Relaxtation brings peace, brings contempt.
If only the hammock could find more time in my days.

Along with many other issues of this time period, the Thirty Years War was caused by a multitude of different thing, but nostly by the religious conflicts of the time and the economic failure. Religion had not only become an isse between othernations, but it had become a civil issus where people were battling their own government and their claim of power over their religious opinions. The Thirty Years War was destined to come eventually considering all of the internal conflict going on in Europe, but the Reformation sparked new ideas of religion and expressing new opinions publicly. Therefore this opened new doors to freedom that the government did not want to acknowledge. The efffects of the Thiryt Years War were like many other wars, economic depression, lack in trade, failure in ecomonmy in general, and price issues. Prices were being raised and less people were becoming wealthy. Like many wars before and after it, the Thirty Years War caused the economy to become extrememy slow and the culture therefore suffered. The effects of this war were extremely evident all over Europe for many years.

DIFFICULT DAYS

She wore a long, plain dress to the office today,
and a light green sweater
that matched her perfect eyes…
Irresistible in her girlish things
she has me thinking about holding her again,
which is a mistake
because she’s wearing those pretty clothes for someone else.
For some other guy
who tonight,
right about the time I’m broke down and crying into my pillow,
will be helping her take that dress off.

This song and poem connect together because they are both discussing the disappointing and upsetting feelings of being in love with a woman and seeing that she in with another man. This poem is very emotional and sad; the writer sees that the love of his life is in love with another man and there is nothing he can do about it. In this song, singer Rhett Akins sings about when he found his love with another man behind his back. He drives past her house and sees a truck in the driveway that "aint his truck". This song is very sad and expresses his disappointment when he sees his girl with another man.

What do you want to be when you grow up?"
What child cries out, "An Exterminator!"?
One dilligent student in Mrs. Taylor's class will get an ant farm for Christmas,
but he'll not see industry; he'll see dither. "
The ant sets an example for us all," wrote Max Beerbohm, a master of dawdle,
"but it is not a good one."

Those children don't hope to outlast the doldrums of school
only to heft great weights and work in squads and die for their queen.
Well, neither did we.
And we knew what we didn't want to be:
the ones we looked down on, the lambs of God,
blander than snow and slow to be cruel.


I chose these line breaks because I saw rhis poem as a conversation. This writer is conveying the innocence of the young and was society has turned economic prosper into. Success and money have begun ot take over the thoughts of prospective students, whereas innocent young children depend on their creative dreams. These breaks reveal the conversation and thoughts of these young children, their dreams, and the apparent need for economic succes on current society. The breaks also show the detachment from the thought of merely concentrating on money and success. I always put a break between the negative and positive outlooks because I thought the writer would want this clearly separated for comparison and contrast to what he percieves as life's true pleasures.
